The Countdown Begins
I will begin writing applications on Friday, September 15th. Note that many sessions are likely to send me into the following evening, and thus don't expect a midnight "deadline". And yes, my wife is going to kill me.
I wrote an application everyday for 30 days straight. The world benefitted from the purposeful destruction of my personal life. Apps written 9/15/2006 - 10/14/2006. Access downloads using the link on the right under navigation.

Would mods to games be considered applications?
Can we get a program to keep track of homework due? With scheduling? And all the other groovy stuff the mac homeworking software has?
How about a piece of software that enables you to edit, add and change EXIF information from digital cameras.
How about a printer driver for old plotters? (i.e. HPGL hardware) The specification is very easy and there are tons of old printers lying around with no drivers.
How about software that can be used to read a pdf/text document from far away.
The software wouldn't be too difficult, as you would just need to blank the screen and put in huge fonts that scroll at a user set rate(between 5-30 wps[words per second]) on the screen. Sorta like that boring old windows screen saver, but it would scroll a ebook or something.
design a program thats scans the network for all computers, through like ip scaning or something, once it locates computer within the network it then begens to scan the computer looking for exploits, that r possible, now there already some programs that can do that, once it finds an exploit, it then uses that exploit to run whichever execuble you want, the ideal is you can create a network destoyer, hehe, if you want simple....ummm a program that finds exploits and uses them.... there
How about a stand alone sirius satellite desktop widget that can display album art, pictures and track/artist info on the current song.
Could you write a small app that is like an all in one web server. LIke it has Ruby, PHP, Apache, EVERYTHING, with a few click setup. I really want that :P
a program to download RTMP streams would be excellent
how about an app that takes in an application described in XML and outputs it in various programming languages, paving the way to an "auto port" application.
A frontend for ffmpeg with all the options and support for xml presets.
I'm an opera user, and I'd like to see an app that automatically runs the "Delete Private Data" task in the background every time I shut down Opera. And apparently, I'm not the only one:
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=148133
Perhaps it's not technically a stand-alone app; does making a widget qualify?
Good luck with your project!
Hmmm....
How about a program to keep track of user-logintime, and lock the screen when a counter hits 0? Coupled with a database, so, say, a cafe could use it to sell internet time in blocks?
How about an alarm clock app that displays a clock on your screen, and plays an mp3 file at your specified wake-up time? Cool project idea...I hope your marriage survives!
The text scroller guy has a great idea! I'd use it as a teleprompter for video projects. If you could simply point to a text file, set the speed and size of the text, and whether it's black on white or white on black, it'd be very useful.
Here's an idea for an application, I actually was messing around with this and wrote a really hacked version in a couple hours but essentially it was a program that accepted a search term such as "zombiepubcrawl2006" and used the flickr API to search for images with that tag then it downloaded them all to my HD. I then passed them into a mosaic making program to get the final image. If you could come up with something that automatically turned images taken from flickr searches into mosaics that woudl be a great program!
How about a program that spiders a web site produces all the links/titles in XML then proceeds to validate said pages using Tidy and ideally also checks accessibility producing XML results of pages passed automatic tests and also an XML file for each page with any fails.
Hımm.
I supported your action and wish good lucks.
I wanna keep you in countenance so this is my opinion:
What about a cataloger sowtware for collecting user comments etc..
Or even a CD cataloger for the contents of the CDs.
Good Luck.

I really need an app for tracking game tournaments. Something like Gamebattles.com but for everyone to use. There just isn't anything out there for us game lovers!
:(
I've often wished I had a small app that you could use to compare two blocks of text instead of comparing whole files. For example, to compare a short section of two Word files. I envisioned two side by side text boxes that you would paste the two samples into, hit the button, and Voila'! the differences are highlighted.
A nice Hex to Ascii converter that works...
It would be nice to have a working Win32 version of WHICH (command line utility, tells the path of a given application).
(Example:
> which tree
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tree.com
)
How about an app that lets you write text and then use simple HTML tags to convert it into "Wiki" coding for posting to Wikipedia or other wikis.
How about a matrix-builder? Add up to 3 axes, add coordinates to the axes and then add cell values. Export the matrix as an XML Object.
I'd love a "ReStart" application... whereby, instead of dumping applications into the "startup" folder in windows, you only put "your app" in there.
when starting up, "your app" would show what stuff will start, when a timer goes off (say 10sec default), where each item is a checkmark, so you can decide to opt-out of a typical app.
Why? Huh?... well, what I find, is that every time I reboot my PC, I want to open my web browser, email client, a text editor, and a bunch of tools... but some days, I'm in a rush... I want none of that to start, except my email client... but in general, for the days where I turn on my PC, and go grab a coffee... I want all that stuff to start while I'm adding sugar & cream.
Non-destructive JPG rotator. 90, 180, 270. This already exists in some applications, but a quicky stand-alone version would be nice.
Single-click USB thumb drive unplug/ejector for system tray. Takes too many clicks right now.
Make your first app be a container for all your other mini apps. Folks could then add, customize and organize the other mini apps as they see fit.
Tiny notes program for writing little tidbits when I need to...
Also a miniaturized/customizable prompt for easy program execution from the desktop. One that you can use like bash but on Windows. This double-clicking thing is getting old...
./firefox
:D
A customizable program that gets headlines from major sites like digg and then uses a computerized voice like at&t's to read the headlines to you while you do other stuff.
How about a useless app that gives daily stats about number of key presses, mouse clicks, bandwidth used, pages viewed, idle time, active time, etc... with graphs over time.
I don't use desktop icons, I use the optional desktop toolbar in the start menu of WinXP and quicklaunch combined.
My suggestion is an extremely small footprint app launcher/folder opener. It could have a hotkey that spawns it wherever I've currently got my cursor and it could either be in a "classic" top to bottom menu design or a circular web design that would allow me to have a string of folders open and show the relationships between the folders. Fully customizable would be great, but, hey, I'm not picky.
I could really use something like this...
You know what would be a wonderful little application? An ultra-lightweight file transfer program using IPs.
Plug in the IP, and a local path, click send. On the other end, the user gets a prompt to accept or decline.
This would be useful for the many of us who use programs such as Trillian and Gaim to interface with multiple IM networks at the same time, since the file transfer protocols are often broken or incompatible in some way.

"I plan on writing an application everyday for 30 days straight. May the world will benefit from the purposeful destruction of my personal life."
Start with a grammer checker.
I think it's a really cool idea! I'll watch this blog and see how it works out.
This remember me of "How To Build a Game In A Week From Scratch With No Budget" but this time it's even more hardcore.
-An app to which you give the url of a website and which tells you it's ranking in various search engines (google, msn, yahoo,...)
-An app to which you give a directory and search all the source code files (.cs, .vb,...) inside and spit out some statistics : total number of file, total number of line of codes, how many lines are blank, how many lines are comment, a ratio instructions/comments, number of methods,...
-An application that receive a list of ip and which warns you when an ip is no longer responding or start responding again. Bonus if it can perform an operation when it happens (launch an application, start a batch,...)
a SIP client for symbian 9.1 ?? :)
Please finish this method...

i want a 'lost' countdown clock, i tried looking at the source of kodo, kde's ordometer, or whatever, and haaving a command in /usr/bin/ called 4 which checked the arguments for 8 15 16 23 42 but c# just aint my thing. but then again you want to *write* an app a day, so using other source isnt availible.........
Mr. Bob
that people might actually use.. Perhaps a greeting card program that utilizes peer-to-peer submissions by other people that have the same program. Kind of like people that write their own hallmark cards, whatever they come up with might be used by someone else. A kind thought spoken a certain way to a loved one etc... Might be useful for people who can't use technology very well. Plus seeing the source would be cool.
How about a app to convert perl script files into php script files?
I could really use a desktop application that allows me to configure a data transfer from one database to another where the databases have completely different data definitions and models.
How about a app that converts Perl Script files into PHP script files?
A semi-automated HP/Compaq/Dell new computer de-crapifier. Lose the AOL, excise the Wild Tangent, destroy all product offers. Check the start-up and analyze to see: a.)if the speed is effected by these installations and b.) which of the programs are good canidates for removal.
I'd like to second the homework scheduling app. If you could make it open source that would be awsome. I'd like to customize it some as well.
dude, you should totaly do an Ascii art paint program!
a user friendly re-represntation of the regedit, to make cleaning it out alot easier. When a website tells u how to manually remove a virus, or make an addition to fix an error it will be helpful for those people that are not technically inclined

Should be quick, but, not easy...
Write a program that determines who has WiFi enabled in the area that your wifi card can receive/send signals. Create an IM that will allow you to IM people via WiFi. ie; on a plane, you turn on your WiFI IM, with a few others on the plane that may have WiFIM enabled. You are now chatting wirelessly throughout the plane...
Good luck Jedi !
What about an application which automatically turns your computer on and plays a song so it turns your comptuer into a awesome alarm clock?
COuld be quite fun :P
how about an alarm clock that you can set the time(s) with settings like every other day (except weekends), weekends only, MWF, TR, and weekdays only...with advanced settings
it could make a loud noise via speakers(of course) to wake somebody up in the room (me) :p
I would like to see a C# app that would allow a user to get authenticated into an AD domain but without having to join one.
This would allow applications that need a Kerberos ticket, Outlook and Windows messenger to authenticate without prompting to log in.
This is especially useful with contractors at my work location who need to use AD a lot but are not allowed to join their laptops to our domain.
A free version of a program like "Delicious Library" and of course for a MAC and Window's....Wouldnt this count as two programs if one was for a MAC and one for Windows..
A WYSIWYG editor for MAC Dashboard widgets.
Different types of programs like PocketMOD. Made in java, stand alone. Maybe a way to print ebooks or documents very small to save paper.
I would like to put an idea of multiple timers, sort of a coking timer but can be configured that you can be labeled and timer setup.
I second the thought about printing things in a smaller format. Like the DIY planner. Maybe a way to take a PDF, DOC, TXT,ODT file and print it out so multiple pages are on 1 sheet of A4 paper. Simular to the PocketMOD app, but able to be multiple sheets.
How about an easy way to strip the .mpg video out of those stupid .tivo video files.
Here's some reference material: http://www.zatznotfunny.com/ttg.htm
Good Luck!
I'd like a program that protected "focus" for windows users.
What I mean is a program that would not interrupt you typing for a pop up or system dialog box.
Often times I'm busy typing while watching TV only to discover some program has deemed fit to steal my keyboard focus.
How about a very small email app that would just allow you to send a quick email to someone without having to load a web page or application thats bloated?
It would save email addresses, and if possible, a search box that would narrow down addresses just gmail.
The app would be very basic, with a tool bar, address box and message body area with ofcourse a send button.
It could not recieve emails. Rather just a very simple, small memory footprint, email app that would allow you to shoot off emails very quickly.

Thank you
I would like to see an acronym list generator for documents. I envision something that just scans through and pulls out all of the capitalized words... and if it has three words ahead of it that start with the same letter, pre-populate the definition field. This at least gives you a starting point... it is a daunting task to generate manually for a technical document that is over 100 pages (assuming the author wasn't smart enough to do it as s/he went along). If nothing else, it lets you double check to make sure you didn't miss anything.
Hey i got a month free, i've been into J2EE and .Net. and i'm trying to find coding projects I think i'm going to get some ideas off here just for practicing .Net 2.0. Would you like some company on your endavour?
you can contact me if you wish at dipidi@gmail.com.
An acronym generator for large documents. It is a pain to do manually when the author hasn't kept a running list. It is also a good way to double check an existing list. It could be as simple as scanning a document for words in all caps, and extracting the words before if they start with the right letters.
Is there really any point to running:
public void GetLife()
{
[...]
}
...if it doesn't return anything?
Sorry for the dupe on the AG (Acronym Generator).
Another idea... for those people that have copied TV shows from DVD into iTunes... an easy interface that allows you to edit the metadata on iTunes compatable videos would be handy. iTunes itself won't let you edit all of the video tags (like season number)... which complicates viewing on the ipod. The new iTunes 7 may fix this, but I'm guessing not... haven't checked it out yet.
How about a to-do list. A real one, not a glorified sticky not. Something that you could put in a task, time and date assigned/started, date needed by, progress and/or status, a "complete" checkbox, etc.
If you wanted to make it super spiffy you could make it networkable so that everyone in an office could look at it and use it. You could even include things like "group tasks" if you get adventurous enough to try something like multiple users or logins.
I'm assuming that's supposed to be "Sticky Note" not "Sticky Not".
Here's my suggestion. Create a tiny PIM to keep track of any and all information (phone nos, todos, dates, people, movies, files, CDs, DVDs, etc etc). Define any data structure just by adding information and tags. Browse/explore with tags and facets (see http://orange.sims.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/flamenco.cgi/nobel/Flamenco) - not hierarchy. Secure encryption.
I would like an app that puts a semi-friendly face on traceroute. At my office routers go down regularly. But IT's normal response to ask you a bunch of questions about your computer, convincing them one of their routers needs to be rebooted is difficult. I'd like to have an app that keeps are (rolling) log of regular traceroutes and generates a simple diff report if a router goes down so it's easy for me give the pertinent information to give to IT phone rep.
i would like a keyboard mapper / launcher thingy for windows - e.g. option-windows-e opens my browser, option-windows-t opens my putty client, option-windows-z opens my zend IDE and so on. This would be good as a control panel. I should be able to map any application or command to any key with any combination of modifiers.
A kiosk application for younger children. Parents can drop shortcuts (applications, files and websites). When the kid logs in to his/her account a simple kiosk is presented with big buttons for each shortcut. The child would not be able to screw with the contol panels, ctrl-alt-del etc.
Bonus points for removing most of the navigation from the web browser so the kid doesn't accidentally navigate away from the page they are playing on.
Super bonus points for grabbing a screen shot of the file or website and using it as a thumbnail for the short cut in the kiosk.
I'd like you to make an mp3 duplicate remover, that searches ID3 Tag info as well as file name info and also tells you the bitrate for comparison.
Might be a bit more low-level than you intend, but a driver that allows you to input video from a network source, such as an Axis webcam (URL to MJPEG stream, that is).
From the eye-candy department, I'd love to see a Quicklaunch-like bar that magnifies the way the OSX dock does.
An outlook plug-in that allows you to synch contacts, tasks and appointments with a generic database (mysql or ms sql server). It would rule to have the plug-in installed on multiple computers allowing synchronization of contacts and appointments in a home office (mom and pop type business). Once in the database, custom applications could access the data... or even better... custom applications can use outlook as a hub to synch with a pocket pc or palm pilot etc.
Huge bonus points for figuring out how to store the recurring appointment algorithm and using it in another application. Huge bonus points!
An open source FolderShare style client/server application. I know foldershare is free, but it limits the amount of files you can have in a library. It would be killer to have control of the server so it could be customized according to needs.
A tool that validates html and xml tags. If html is truncated sometimes the tags don't get closed and it can cause unwanted formatting problems.
A tray application that lets you grab the hex color on a screen. I'm always opening fireworks or photoshop in order to grab a color from a photo or website.
A web page analysis plugin for IE or Firefox. The plug-in would tell you the size of a page including all of the linked resource (images, javascripts etc.)
Bonus points for displaying a list of all linked resources, what it's file size is, and the ability to save the resource to a specified location on your hard drive (like the desktop). That would be the balls!
Sorry for spamming you with all my ideas. These are just a few of the things I've started working on but never finsihed. I'd love to share what I have, but I'd also like to see how a "jedi programmer" writes code.
Okay... fine... one more idea. I have a messy desktop. It'd be cool to have an invisible app that lets you define spaces or sections on your desktop and you could have the app automatically organize folders in one section, zip files in another, etc... I'm always downloading stuff to my desktop and it would be nice to have it orgainized into little groups.
Desktop as a whiteboard
You have - let's say - a paint bucket in the corner of the screen and when you click on it - pointer changes to a brush and you can paint and/or write on your desktop. Click on the bucket again to return to normal pointer-mode.
Everything you painted stays on the screen of course.
I assume the purpose of your effort is to crank out a couple of things that might ultimately have a financial return... if that's the case, you've still got a lot of free nights.
How about a mobile GPS app that works like a compass -- with a big arrow that points you to your destination (or to where you left your car in the mall parking lot)? Should have broader appeal than something like an EXIF editor.
Or maybe a database for baby names that's actually SEARCHABLE? Some people do need reminding that the last letter of the first name and the first letter of the last name, should usually be different letters. Would generate some AdSense cash, and I can point you to a free names database and some basic naming rules...
How about something like SaveMyAss.com, except with a wider range of products tied to actual gift-giving occasions? Get your products as an Amazon/1800Flowers affiliate, and you should have something with fairly low maintenance.
The big online movie rental companies (Netflix, Blockbuster) lack any real movie recommendation engine. This kind of collaborative filter is quite easy to build; it's the database of movies that's harder to come by. People might be interested in receiving email notices about new movies that are out... again, affiliate program comes to mind (links to DVDs on Amazon, etc.) Hard to believe that big companies like Netflix are missing this opportunity.
If you make any money, please cut me in :)

Start with a grammer checker
How about you start with a spell checker?
This is a program that I've wanted for quite some time, I found one that functioned, but was no longer being developed (It was completely abandoned, had to find a crack to use it :/).
A program that will hide windows when a hotkey is triggered, removing them completely from the taskbar tray, and perhaps add a trigger to maximize certain windows and/or launch programs. It would also have a seperate hot-key for returning the windows.
Make a simple backup app. Basically just copies all files in a user set list from directories x to directories y. Scheduling would be awesome for this! Anyway, I could REALLY use that. :)
Gaming ladder for clans would be nice.
And yes ez backup software. :-)
How about a program that applies changes made in Picasa to all images in bulk (meaning all at once).
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Personally I've always found finding the ideas for the programs much harder than writing the programs themselves.... so while writing an app every day might be a demonstration of dedication to spend long hours at the keyboard: A far more impressive feat would be to come up with 30 good ideas all by yourself.
"CAPITOL Letter Converter" changes capitol lettering into lower case letters and the other way around..
I sometimes am designing a site and customers give me the content they want and its all in caps so I have to re write it which sucks.
a html base keylogger to load from the usb drive
App to customer rebilling... I charge customers yearly for service and want a program that will remind me when someones balance is due... it would include
- client and amount of balance.
- early reminder
- email notification reminder for client
- and a back up and import feature so you can back it up and take it to another computer.
You can call the program "Pay Up sucker"
I would really like an app that collects all the windows event logs for a range of servers in one place and can flag and maybe send alerts via email for critical errors.
I would love to see some sort of software to convert quickbooks files from one version to another...you can use thier software to upgrade (i.e. from basic to pro, and pro to enterprise) but you cannot downgrade (i.e. from enterprise to premier or pro). There is ONE package that does this...but does it account by account by account...I just need to take an ENTIRE file, and make it useable without having to pay hundreds of dollars for each conversion (currently done by a service)...accountants will LOVE this.
Something useful, -not- based on sample or auto-generated template code. I dare you. Any kid can make 30 .net managed dx cube rotater apps off of the same sample code.
i think a tool that would allow multiple machines to share a common mouse and keyboard would be great. i have a Linux box and a windoze box and am constantly trying to use the windows machine with the linux keyboard, and vice versa.
How about some kick butt screen savers that you can run on your desktop? I like that Linux Xig Water drop screensaver desktop. Perhaps an optimized one for Intel processors would be awesome!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEgUTkWi-zU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6ooRpGVe4g
I would very much like to see a simple application that can edit file creation and modification dates.
Perhaps an app that changes your desktop at intervals set by you? Pehaps rearranges the icon configuration as well? I don't know if either is possible.
Also, an app that is an alarm clock that can, say, log onto XM radio online using your login info, and start playing a station, or play a set MP3, or any mp3 from a list, or any number of other things. A useful alarm app for windows.
I'm a designer with thousands of fonts installed on my computer. Having so many fonts installed really slows down the machine on both boot up and application start.
How about an application that allows you to create font sets and switch them in and out of the installed fonts area. I think it would be a godsend to designers that dont have the best machines.
What about a video converter? It would be awesome to see a linux or at least freeware *everything* to avi converter
Two ideas:
SIMPLE DATABASE
The user could create fields and put them into cards. The user could always to decide to omit a field from an individual card and always be able to add more fields to all cards in the database.
Fields would be able to be hold files, customizable text, or an entry from a user-edited drop-down list. (For example, the field would only have five options and you could select one from a drop-down menu.)
The user would also be able to search from any field.
SIMPLE COMIC LAYOUT:
The user would draw primitives around and then drop images into them. The images could then be moved around within the box or scaled.
Then the user could add text-boxes and balloons for dialog. A text box would just be dragging a box over an area and adding text to it.
Speech balloons would start with a circle and then the user would select a point and it'd draw a triangle from that point to a part of the circle completing the speech bubble.
A lot of comics use a line to connect multiple bubbles. That would be a matter of selecting multiple bubbles and hitting connect.
You'd also need a means of keeping track of which things are on top of other things.
Also, the user should be able to export it as an image of resolution chosen by the user.
I look forward to this event.
Not sure if its been suggested...too many to read. But I would like an app, like the google gadget scratch pad, except it allows middle button pasting into it and autocopy on select (like unix). Sometimes I some repetive tasks in windows apps and need to paste the same thing repeatedly, hate having to do the ctrl-c, ctrl-v all teh time. would be nice to click paste, click paste...
good luck
How about a freeware version of anydvd? Could also use a better viewer for comics.
How about a program that allows you to connect any ordinary phone to your PC through a modem, and hook it directly into skype?
I wouldn't mind a good mp3 tag editor, preferrably for large batches, an excel/spreadsheet-type interface would be good, and the ability to easily play the mp3 you are looking at from within the editor (using an external mp3 player if you must)
1. Make Thats not a picture into a universal binary.
2. Port Highly Experimental as an iTunes Plugin.
3. Write a program that will convert a series of images into an avi or mov or mp4.
I have been looking for a clean, simple program that will sit in the taskbar and at a set time every # number of hours or at a specific time every day restart or shutdown the computer. But it must force the shutdown to happen everytime. Don't care how crude or rude it does the shutdown. Trying to get a homemade network scanner station to reboot every night and it's problematic!!! AGGG
Hi,
I think your idea is quite good.
But with only one day (average), how do you ensure the quality of your application?
Do you have enough time to implement the design/test?
Podcast Aggregator
People who are giving ideas for personal use please remember..it has to work for others too..then it wud be a good app..
I would like an app that would rectify recovered files that don't work.
File types such as .3gp, .jpg, .avi after deleted recovery fail to play. Sometimes due to crosslinking but soetimes when there is no crosslinking..it can be opened, but fails to open
I put a shorcut in the windows system folder that is named "w" for Winamp. so when ever i want to run winamp, i jsut do [#]+ r and type w...i.e Windows Start>Run>w>enter
Make an app that monitors frequently used programs.
Selects an Alphabet from A-Z to represent that program from the exe of that program.
Offers the user if he wants to place a shortcut in the windows folder for that program after say 20 uses of the program.
And it displays the shorcut alphabet it has selected to the user giving it the option of the other alphabets the user can assign from A-Z or the available Alphabets
keeps an updated list of alphabets assigned to which program.
I am sure remembering 26 alphabets for 26 programs is easy..anyway not many use 26 programs.with great frequency i.e.
I would love a little service to avoid losing 1-2 dollars for cell phone directory service.
I would like to send an email message from my cell that looks similar to this:
to: 411@server.com
subject:
Body:
auto parts,02024
The server will take the email, and see two fields that are comma delimited. field one is the search pattern and field two is the location. It plugs in the info to yp.yahoo.com or similar, then returns top 3 - 5 results in a text message back to my phone.
I sent you an email about it bounced!
a plug-in for firefox that allows you to rotate the browser 90 deg, so if I'm on a UMPC I can decide whether I want it book-like or widescreen.
Hi Dana,
I also sent an email regarding my idea. It is a plugin for Microsoft Outlook which would allow me when I click on an Inbox for an IMAP email account such that when I click New Message it should default to that email account as the sender and not the Primary.
This feature is available in Outlook Express if you are using their Hotmail accounts. Thanks.
Brian
