What happened to chatting
IRC used to be HUGE 6-10 years ago. What ever happened to this interactive use of the internet? Little java chats and flash chats pop up here and there, but they aren't the same. I've found chatting while coding to be extremely productive for my little project. I can get live feedback from other developers who are watching my screen. A couple of nights ago, someone even corrected my code for me.
So here's what I've done. Instead of using another monitor (although you still could), I built an add-in for Visual Studio 2005 which allows you to dock or float an IRC chat window within your IDE. Hot stuff! I won't be turning to the side and using mIRC anymore hopefully! More time with my eyes in the IDE means less time writing these pesky apps everynight.
Check this new app out in The download blog!

I went to try a couple apps. I cannot use them. Why? They want .Net!!
Last year Microsoft announced support for .Net will end
Can you use something that is cross platform usable? Many of us (and in a few months/years) most will not be Windows only users.
One thing I've noticed though, the apps I've seen here already exist as Open Source initiatives (in some cses very robust ones). I really hope you took that into consideration, because I think it's a lot of work you 're doing to create some stuff that's alraedy been around for a bit. You seem talented, would hate to read that you're doing needless work (... I mean, stuff that's already been done elsewhere and is already cross platform).
Yikes!!
:-)
It's quite simple to install .NET.
"Last year Microsoft announced support for .Net will end". While I'm not aware of the exact date for support ending, you are correct, eventually it will end. This isn't suprising at all! Did you think they'd support it forever?
Microsoft will continue to provide an upgrade path (Many peices of .NET 3.0 are in alpha/beta already!). Many large companies have teams of .NET developers and rely on their tools everyday.
Surely some similar open source projects exist. This site is about showing the power of RAD coupled with .NET 2.0. It's an ever evolving site, but think of it as an insirational .NET tutorial site.
I used to write a lot of Java, and enjoy it quite a bit. I've also done a tremendous amout of web work. I'll attempt to incorporate those technologies at some point.
Please realize that this project is not a personal attempt to make .NET and Microsoft take over the world.
The purpose of the site is to have fun.
Where do you want to go today?
LOL
There needs to be a web 2.0 relay chat system, totally ignoring the old protocol
"Whatever happened to this interactive use of the internet?"
Instant Messaging is what happened to IRC.
I second the idea of an ajax real time chat system, think of the infinite logging possibilities!
